There are excellent career opportunities in managing the growing number of branches, subsidiaries and joint ventures that companies have around the world. The rapid expansion of international business has been encouraged by the liberalisation of trade and the massive flows of direct foreign investment by companies. Organisations like the World Trade Organisation have been established to facilitate this trend. It is particularly important for developing countries to have a better supply of managers and experts who have a sound understanding of how to manage in other countries that have very different cultures and institutions.

For graduates wishing to develop a career in international business, the opportunities span a wide range of possibilities. Multinational corporations are very short of managers, coming from countries other than their domestic base, who have the understanding to operate comfortably in different countries. Small and medium sized firms with strong niche positions are also increasingly looking for talented and well-trained staff to help them undertake international expansion. In major emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India, successful domestic firms are poised to become multinational through expanding overseas. They too welcome graduates with the appropriate knowledge about doing business internationally.

The programme is run by the International Management and Organisation Group in the Business School. It draws on the talents of internationally respected scholars and highly respected teachers across the whole School. Their expertise covers globalisation, the international aspects of accounting and finance, corporate governance, e-commerce, human resource management, marketing, organisation of multinational corporations, operations and procurement, and strategy. Regional specialists with expertise on Africa, China, Europe and Latin America also teach on the programme.

By the end of the programme, you will have acquired a high standard of knowledge in the principles, theoretical concepts and practice of international business. You will be able to analyse issues arising in international business, and will be sensitive to the cross-cultural and cross-national aspects of management.

In addition, you will have further developed a range of valuable personal skills. These include skills in managing research projects, the ability to examine previous literature critically, the design of research investigations, the use of statistical and other techniques, presentation skills, and those of problem solving and organising group work. All are valuable capabilities for your future career development.
