With over 70 lecturing and research staff – many internationally recognised authorities in their field – all major business subject areas are represented within the School. A number of research centres have been developed to build on areas of specialised excellence reflecting a dynamic global environment. International Finance, Strategy and Procurement Management, Industrial Strategy and EU-South East Asia Trade are amongst them. Members of the School maintain close links with industry, the financial community and major business professions. Consultancies have been undertaken for many companies and organisations such as the World Bank, the Bank of England and the Asian Development Bank. There are links with a number of governments and members of staff have been seconded from the University to play major roles in the regulation of industry and in advising national institutions. The School is also well represented in technical, educational and research functions of a variety of professional bodies.
The Campus
The University of Birmingham is situated within 234 acres of parkland and includes large lawns and even a lake. Its architecture is varied from the grand traditional Victorian redbrick buildings of the Great Hall to the recently built extension to the Business School. The campus contains a variety of retail outlets including several restaurants, banks, bookshops and supermarkets. The Barber Institute houses a concert hall and holds an international collection of paintings within its gallery. The University Library houses well over one and a half million volumes and is actually one of the most extensive university libraries within the UK.
Sports facilities on campus are excellent. There is a sports hall, gym, swimming pool, saunas as well as an outdoor running track.
The City of Birmingham

This programme encompasses accounting in its international, public and private contexts, corporate financial management, private sector investment and foreign exchange markets. It aims to give you a deep knowledge of the theoretical and empirical literature that provides the background to understanding changes and innovations in accounting and finance.
Environmental and natural resource economists deal every day with the most challenging problems facing mankind: global climatic change, environmental pollution, deforestation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity and food poverty, to name but a few. This programme is aimed at providing you with the skills necessary to understand the fundamental causes of contemporary environmental problems, and to design policies to solve them.
This demanding programme teaches theories and techniques of investments, as well as their real-life application. It is designed for graduates who want to develop a career in investment institutions, or who wish to become investments specialists or managers in other corporate bodies.
The MSc. in Development Economics is one of the Department's newer taught MSc. programme. It reflects the Department's growing strength in both theoretical and applied policy areas, particularly as they relate developing countries.
This programme provides an advanced training in economic theory and econometrics, and application of these to achieve a sophisticated understanding of policy issues. It constitutes the taught part of an ESRC-recognised '1+3' programme leading to a PhD degree, reflecting the strength of our diverse research interests.

The MSc. in International Economics is a taught graduate programme that provides specialised and advanced training in international economics. This is achieved through the delivery of specialised courses in trade theory, trade policy and econometrics.
This programme complements the MSc in Money, Banking and Finance, and, as with that programme, is of particular interest to those wishing to pursue careers in the financial sector. It provides you with an advanced knowledge of the related disciplines of macroeconomics, banking, international finance and financial markets.
This programme, taught jointly by the School of Mathematics and the Department of Economics, provides the skills that will enable technically able graduates (including in mathematics, science and engineering) to apply their quantitative training to financial analysis.
